We are also committed to the consideration and promotion of best practice in pedestrian and cycle planning and design.

Top Ten Ideas for Great Cities

1. Inner City Metro
2. Kerbside lanes become 20km/hr shared zones in inner city locations
1
2
PedBikeTrans would like to see mass transit systems implemented in inner suburbs to improve public transport accessibility, reliability and convenience. This would involve the kerbside lanes being converted to mixed use zones where cyclists have priority, but still allows slow moving traffic or buses to access if necessary.

3. Two Way contra flow lane for cyclists on surface roads

4. Laneways

3
4
In locations where tunnels or other new road network projects have been constructed, PedBikeTrans would like to see a traffic lane on the above ground streets being converted to two way bicycle lanes. Let's convert the laneways in CBDs and suburban centres to active places with cafes, artwork, shopfronts, festivals.

5. Streets as social spaces and making open spaces places/destinations

6. Lower speeds in CBD/suburban centres

5
6
Reclaim streets for social space e.g. make play streets at certain times of day/week, allow farmers markets, create places for socialising, not just shopping, by closing the street once per week.  Cities need more places for public squares, plazas and parks which are great places to socialise and hang out in. Slower speeds will make these centres more attractive places to be and safer places to walk and cycle.

7. Wider footpaths

8. More pedestrian green time at signals

7
8
Increasing the width of footpaths in CBDs and suburban centres will make them more attractive to walk, shop, and sit.  Could use “Road Diet” concept to reduce road width for wider footpaths. PedBikeTrans would like to see the time available for people to cross the road at traffic signals made longer. This is particularly important for CBDs and suburban centres and provides everyone the chance to safely cross.  PedBikeTrans would also like to see a policy introduced where all signalised intersections allow pedestrians to cross on all legs, as well as a reduced waiting time.

9. Protected bicycle lanes

10. Support city bike hire scheme

9
10
PedBikeTrans PedBikeTrans would like to see protected bicycle lanes on all major road systems by 2020. These types of facilities are also called Copenhagen style bicycle facilities. These make it safer to cycle by separating bicycles from traffic and from pedestrians.  Implementing these along routes to schools should be the first place to start. PedBikeTrans supports the implementation of free bicycle hire schemes in inner city suburbs where there will be pools of bikes available at a number of locations. Such schemes should also be extended to other towns around Australia (Cairns, Glenelg, Fremantle etc).
